Practical tips for choosing theatre seats

Picking a seat for a concert, play or dance performance is about more than price. Whether you are heading to a university hall such as Popejoy Hall on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque or to a theatre closer to home in Toluca, the same principles help you get the most from your ticket.

Know the sections

Most proscenium theatres are divided into an orchestra (stalls) level, one or more balconies or mezzanines, and sometimes boxes. Front orchestra seats put you close to performers' faces and expressions, but very front rows can mean looking up at the stage. A few rows back, or the front of a mezzanine, often gives a better view of choreography, staging and full ensemble scenes.

Match the seat to the show

• Dance and large-scale productions: slightly elevated seats let you see patterns and movement across the whole stage.
• Drama and comedy: closer seats help you catch dialogue and facial detail.
• Orchestral and choral concerts: central seats mid-hall usually offer the most balanced sound.

Watch for restrictions

Seating charts sometimes mark partial or restricted views caused by pillars, overhangs or extreme side angles. Seats on the far edges of wide rows can cut off part of the stage. If a chart is unclear, contact the venue's box office before buying.

Accessibility and comfort

Aisle seats suit anyone who needs extra legroom or may have to step out. Ask the box office in advance about wheelchair spaces, companion seating, assistive listening devices or interpreted performances, since these often need to be arranged ahead of time.

Buy from official sources

Always purchase through the venue's own box office or its authorised ticketing partner, and check the official website for dates, times and policies. Resale sites can charge inflated prices or sell invalid tickets.
